National Thrift Shop Day is just around the corner, and we need your help to put together a complete list of deals! Whether you represent a thrift store or chain, or have just seen postings for discounts at your local store, let us know about your deals. We’ll publish a complete list of deals by Thursday, August 14, so that you have lots of time to plan your Thrift Shop Day itinerary.
What is National Thrift Shop Day?
National Thrift Shop Day is an annual event held to honor the world of secondhand shopping and to raise awareness for the organizations that operate thrift stores. It promotes the benefits of thrifting while supporting local communities and encouraging sustainable shopping practices.
National Thrift Shop Day was first celebrated on August 17, 1992, and has been observed annually since then. Major non-profit organizations participate, including Goodwill, the Salvation Army, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Habitat for Humanity, and others. For-profit thrift stores and chains also often participate, including Value Village and National Thrift. Discounts vary, but can often include promotions ranging from 25% to 60% off regular prices. Some stores also celebrate by offering food and free accessories, like branded reusable bags.
When is National Thrift Shop Day?
This year (2025), National Thrift Shop Day falls on Sunday, August 17. Some stores offer deals only on this day, but others may offer deals from the Friday before the event until the Monday that follows. Make sure to check with your local thrift stores to see when (and if) they are participating with any promotions.
How to get the best deals
The best way to find out about discounts offered by your local thrift stores is to follow them online and visit them in-store. Sign up for their newsletters and watch their social feeds to find out when they’re offering deals and what discounts will be offered. Coupons are likely to be sent out several days before the event starts, so make sure you sign up early.
